Today I read of another mayor, police chief or reporter murdered or kidnapped in Mexico. I can't keep track of the thousands killed because of the (dare I say this about Mexico) terrorist acts committed by drug lords. These are acts of terrorism against the United States (and don't think for a minute that the smuggling of drugs into the US is not a terrorist act) and the results of these acts are found in the ghettos of the cities where women and children are in fear of their lives each and everyday. Maybe my idea of freedom is somewhat askew but if one person cannot leave their house, apartment or condo without the fear of being robbed or killed then the ideal of freedom does not exist for them nor in the long run for those of us who do not live in that fear and yet we are living in the same country if not the same town as our fellow countrymen.
Yes, I'm sure this is somewhat idealistic but back to the point of terrorism in our neighboring country. We are spending millions if not billions chasing after boogie men that may or may not be trying to kill Americans here. Yes, there has not been a terrorist act on US soil which may or may not be because of our efforts in Iraq or Afghanistan. Basically, how many of the Tali ban are there? Ten thousand, hundred thousand, one thousand or fifty? How much money has been paid to big US corporations to create new and more powerful means of finding them? Or is the money being spent to create new and more powerful means to watch us? After all, in the long run it will be necessary to curb the homegrown terrorists here. Or the ones that just walked across our southern or northern borders. It is a bit more difficult from Canada, thank goodness but not impossible. But back to the point which in the beginning was considering the drug lords terrorists and using a couple of brigades of American soldiers here on our own borders rather than ten thousand miles away chasing after an enemy that is more interested in just trying to make a living in a country that has always managed to defeat an occupying force. If we are going to be in the business of nation building we better get our aim back here in our country.
More raving at another time. As a relative of mine cried out as he was being disemboweled by the English, "Freedom!" Or at least we would like to think this is what he said instead of "My God, that really hurts."
